These authors and the publisher (Pearson) are nothing more than bandits who don't wear masks. For $143 I purchased the hardcover 5th edition of this textbook for self-study. The table of contents shows Chapters 9 and 10 covering the topics of Optimization and Markov Chains, but indicated there as "Online". I figured that, they are trying to keep the printing costs down by offering optional material online, but I assumed for free or at least covered in the outrageous $143 cost of this thin textbook. But no, access to chapters 9 and 10 requires a separate purchase to gain access via a paywalled rip-off scheme set up by the publisher called mymathlab.com. Additionally, to even sign up, you must be registered for a course that an instructor has set up, so forget about getting access to those chapters for self-study.

I'm familiar with three linear algebra textbooks Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Georgi E. Shilov's Linear Algebra, and now this one. It was recommended to me by one of my brothers, who had the author as a professor at the University of Maryland - College Park.

Gil Strang's book is very well regarded, and I like it, too. However, as a writer, Strang tries a little too hard to be friendly and colloquial. As a result, some of his explanations are less clear than they need to be. It helps that videos of his linear algebra lectures are on the Web at [...], and those lectures clarify some of the "folksy" wording in the textbook. Strang obviously loves his subject and knows it thoroughly, but those qualities, however admirable, do not substitute for clear writing.

Georgi E. Shilov's book is also highly regarded, by me as well. Shilov is one of those no-nonsense Russian mathematicians who's all about the subject and doesn't care if you like him or not. As a result, his writing is very clear and straightforward, albeit a little stiff and formal even in translation. The great virtues of Shilov's book are that the writing is clear and it's very rigorous in fact, a reader would do well to have some familiarity with abstract algebra before starting it. But the book's virtues are also its weakness because of the rigorous treatment, Shilov offers considerably less conceptual hand-holding than Strang. Yes, you can understand what he's talking about, but you'd sure better have a strong mathematical background, time, and self-confidence to plow through his book, especially if it's on your own.

Which brings us, finally, to the Lay book. I am delighted to report that Lay combines the informal, encouraging tone and conceptual hand-holding of the Strang book with the clarity of the Shilov book. In other words, they're all good, but for most undergraduates, Lay is the best of the three. There's also an excellent study guide (Linear Algebra and Its Applications Study Guide (update))for the Lay book.
From my personal experience, this textbook is amazing. Compared to many other math textbooks that I have used, I can actually understand the book's explanations if I miss anything during class. The exercises are great, however the last set of questions from the exercises are generally challenging because the author is trying to hint at the next section without telling you. The textbook is also pretty small and light so it is easy to carry around.
I am taking my first dedicated course in Linear Algebra. This is, seriously, the only textbook I have sat down and can read like a novel. Very well structured, very focused on explaining the subject matter. Obviously you need a base of skills in algebra, but you can definately learn the topic with this book alone.
This is a great introduction to linear algebra for students and those with practical uses for it. I studied linear algebra in college but needed to refresh my recollection of some parts of it. This is better than what I had in school 30 years ago.
This book was required for my class, but the book was well written. It gave good examples and the odd problems had answers in the back. As well, you don't have to buy the solutions manual because all the solutions written out are on Slader.
This book is old school. It makes simple things seem so hard. Because it is focused on stating facts as theorems and giving proofs that seem clever but still shroud the subject in mystery. The new approach is to build intuition, ignore the fancy theorems - at least postpone to a later stage - and instead build things up from scratch. I recommend the online series “The essence of linear algebra” by 3Blue1Brown.com. He does not bother too much with the computational details, so you still need another source for the rigor. But once you know the big picture, everything else fits in so well. KhanAcademy.com too, but in this case, 3blue doesit much better. I should have started there and saved myself a few months of misery.
One of the absolute worst quality e-books I've ever had the displeasure of purchasing. The "book" artifacts constantly making it impossible to read or focus on the material. Constant resizing is required to avoid the random black squares and diagonal patterns formed in the kindle reader.
